Overview

Parkon tackles the acute parking crisis in Indian cities, where booming vehicle ownership has outpaced stagnant infrastructure. Through 7 in-depth interviews, 5 paper-prototype tests, 4 design iterations, and 3 rounds of usability testing, we shipped a mobile UI that reduces parking search time by an estimated 40% and eases anxiety around availability, pricing, and safety.

From 20-minute circling and inflated attendant fees to a calm, transparent flow — find, reserve, navigate, and park in under 90 seconds.

User Research

Semi-structured interviews with car owners across Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Pune, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Noida — daily commuters to occasional drivers — paired with low-fidelity prototype tests to validate the core flows.

Recruited 7 car owners across 7 Indian metros to capture regional differences in parking behavior — from valet-heavy Mumbai markets to informal attendant culture in Delhi. Each session ran 45 minutes and combined retrospective storytelling with a live walk-through of the apps they currently rely on.

Interviews

Themes converged quickly: drivers don't want more spots listed, they want to trust the ones shown. Real-time occupancy, transparent pricing, and visible safety cues mattered far more than coverage. Integration with Google/Apple Maps was treated as table stakes, not a feature.

Users distrust apps that show 'spots available' without live data — every participant had been burned by arriving to a full lot.

Price opacity, not price itself, kills trust.

Inflated fees from unlicensed attendants were a top frustration. Transparent, all-in pricing was rated more important than low pricing.

Safety is a gendered differentiator.

Female participants avoided entire areas due to parking-safety concerns. CCTV, lighting, and female-friendly zones were strong unlocks.

Challenges

  • Drivers spend 20+ minutes circling for spots, fueling traffic congestion and idling emissions.
  • Disproportionate demand and supply leads to inflated, opaque pricing from informal attendants.
  • Lack of surveillance in unorganized lots creates safety and theft concerns, especially for women.
  • Existing apps show static spot counts, not live occupancy — drivers abandon bookings and return home.

A two-screen core experience — a calm discovery map and an active booking surface — supported by transparent pricing, verified hosts, and safety signals woven into every step.

Color-coded live pins (green/orange/red, blue for EV), a bottom sheet with distance, price, spots left, and safety rating, and a one-tap Park Now action.

Transparent pricing & verified hosts

All-in prices shown up-front with a dynamic pricing badge and a verified host mark — no surprises at the gate.

Active Booking & Navigation

Countdown to reservation start, free-cancellation timer, live directions with the lot entrance highlighted, and a QR + numeric arrival code.

Safety net

Emergency button to lot security, share-ETA with trusted contacts, and a privacy-preserving in-app chat with the attendant.

Testing Details

  • 5 early paper-prototype tests on the search → book → navigate flow.
  • 3 rounds of high-fidelity usability tests with 10 users total.
  • 9/10 users completed a booking in under 90 seconds.
  • 100% of testers said they would switch to Parkon from their current solution.

Round 1 surfaced low-contrast CTAs and small map-pin labels. Round 2 introduced the free-cancellation countdown and in-app attendant chat. Round 3 validated the end-to-end flow.

Safety perception

The biggest shift came from reframing parking as a trust problem, not a discovery problem. Users didn't need more lots — they needed to believe the lot would be there, priced as promised, and safe to walk back to. Next iterations will focus on two-wheeler support, offline map tiles for the final walk, and a clearer verified-host story.
